“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9). Without doubt, the quintessential former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu is a man of peace. Ho! Ha!!

On Monday 19th March 2012, he uttered contentment at the diktat of peace on the predicament facing the  Nigerian football, he is a sports promoter. Reports by his spokesman, Prince Emeka Obasi showed that Kalu was full of joy that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, was able to command peace and sanity in the Nigerian football, adding that Anyim has shown that he understands our country, because we breath football, eat soccer and dream it, which has always brought unity among Nigerians. Kalu is a man of peace.

We could recall that on Tuesday, December 30, 2003, many of our dailies in their lead stories titled, “Kalu wades into Sepp Blatter, Hayatou face-off” Kalu after leading his pet club, Enyimba of Aba, to victory in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League, set to broker peace between CAF President, Issa Hayatou and Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) President, Sepp Blatter.

While both Blatter and Hayatou were acting as if that all was well with them events showed a different representation. Reports proved that while the FIFA boss was working round the clock to see former Black stars of Ghana captain, Abedi “Pele”Ayew become the next CAF president as at then, Hayatou gave the man behind the successful hosting of the 8th All African games in Abuja, Nigeria, Dr Amos Adamu, his blessing.

Kalu saw the move as essential and paramount for him to make the initiative for peace between the major players in the football forum. Kalu frowned and said that it was not a good thing for FIFA president and the CAF boss to be at daggers drawn, because according to him,  such wrangle could not bring any progress to the football and its association but jeopardy.

In his own word: “I am very concern about the cold war going on between the FIFA president and his CAF counterpart. I understand what is going on as a politician and that is why I feel I am in the best position to broker peace. Both FIFA and CAF have been working together for a long time and that is why we don’t just have to fold our arms without doing anything.”

Dr. Kalu was it who led Enyimba of Aba, as then Governor of Abia State, to break the 38 years old Champions League plague that had trailed Nigerian club sides. He did everything within his power in making sure that the leaders of football at cold war sheathed their swords. In his speech, Dr. Kalu had said: “Once again I am going to take this as a challenge, I am going to do everything within my means to broker peace between Hayatou and Blatter, When I say something I make sure it comes to pass, the records are there.”

Even when Governor Theodore Ahamefule Orji of Abia State was literarily at his best in an interview with some Journalists 20 hours after he was sworn-in for second term and spoke on why he moved against Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, the later showed decorum, because he is a man of peace, a business leader and a political activist.

It is because of this feat that Mike Awoyinfa, Dimgba Igwe, in there book “Orji Kalu: Leadership Lessons from A Master Strategist” tells us that Kalu evokes deep and extreme passions of love and hatred, that is Kalumania and Kaluphobia. He hates liars and unworthy fellows with passion.

As reviewed by Mr. Ray Ekpo, the reviewer captured Kalu’s uniqueness and selfless service to humanity, saying that here is a young man, an undergraduate of the University of Maiduguri, who was rusticated along with other students who refused to go back when recalled.  Reason:  Kalu wanted all other rusticated students recalled.  That didn’t happen so he settled for trading, something that comes naturally to his people, the Igbere people, the Igbo people.  He tried his hands on all sorts, palm oil trading, furniture making, contracts, commodity trading before he broke into the big time, oil lifting.  His business philosophy can be found on pages 20-30 of the book.  It is some kind of pocket MBA.  It may work for you, it may not but it worked for Dr. Kalu.  When you look at his business success it seems such a short walk from a rascally student to a mandarin millionaire.

Notwithstanding, it is a known fact that the art of peace-deal making seems second nature to him.  Ekpo opined that as a student of Eziama High School , the book tells us, Kalu was the deputy team manager for football, even though he never kicked a ball or even an orange.  But Eziama was noted for its soccer wizardry.  In 1976 the school had spanked the famous Government College , Umuahia, 3-0 in the semi- finals of the Imo State Principal’s Cup competition.  Kalu saw an opening for a deal and went for it.  Government College, Umuahia needed some sports laurels with which to garnish its excellent academic record.  The young deal maker, Orji, arranged for some of the Eziama footballers to be admitted at Government College, Umuahia along with him the negotiator.  The following year Government College won the Imo State Principal’s Cup.  Orji’s popularity soared.

Kalu seems to have a knack for capturing attention, Ekpo said. During the IMF debate launched by the Babangida administration, several people were spewing up all sorts of high-falutin suggestions on how we could make our way out of the economic wilderness in which we had found ourselves.  Kalu offered no armchair thesis.  He was down to earth:  why don’t rich Nigerians offer Nigeria some loans to save Nigeria?  He was ready, he said, to drop $800,000 only on the table for that purpose.  He became an instant hit, a celebrity of sorts.  People were bound to ask: Abiola we know, Dangote we know, but who is this?  Reporters trailed him, fortune hunters hounded him.  From then onwards his life was never likely to be the same again. He probably enjoyed the attention he got from the media.

The mafia never thought Kalu could make it for two reasons., Ekpo continued. One, he was no intellectual, a professor or lecturer, who invariably are awe-inspiring individuals for the common people.  Two, Kalu was young, very young and in Igboland, age is a strong reference point and a benchmark for respect although the famous Chinua Achebe had said that when a young man washes his hands he can dine with the elders.  The traditional power brokers didn’t think so.  But they were to be jolted when 2/3 of the state’s local government chairmen Kalu sponsored, won.  They knew there was fire on the mountain.  But as you know the godfather never sleeps.  These ones didn’t. They tried two methods.  One: A forged letter purportedly emanating from the office of the chief of general staff alleged that some contraband seized at Calabar port which belonged to many Igbo traders was engineered by Kalu’s petition.  The traders threatened to deal with him severely even though Kalu reveals that he himself had 13 containers among the trapped cargo.  He had to seek special protection from the army.  Several meetings later, his innocence was established and the matter was settled.

In Chapter 11 of the book Kalu says leadership must go with moral authority for that’s the way to beat followership into line.  He says none of the commissioners and special advisers “I removed said a word when I reshuffled my cabinet and sacked many of them.  In doing that I was daring them to expose me if any of them had any evidence of corruption against me but none of them said a word.  Many of them were even very grateful to have escaped prosecution.”  He said there’s a choice.  “Either serve the public selflessly or go into private ventures to make money.”

With what Anyim has done in reconciling the Nigerian football, it was said that Kalu drove down memory lane to certify a point, likening Anyim's role to what transpired in 1977 when the then Chief-of-Staff, Supreme Headquarters, late Maj. Gen. Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, worked out a deal between Enugu Rangers and Shooting Stars of Ibadan. Inter alia, Kalu said that at this time, we need to give peace a chance.

Nothing is stable in the realm of power, and even closest of friends can be transformed into the worst of enemies-Robert Greene (48 Laws of Power)

Maybe Robert Greene had the prime members of the Mo’Hits family in mind when he wrote his bestselling book, The 48 Laws of Power.  When last weekend music producer and artiste, Michael Collins aka Don Jazzy, confirmed his split with fellow musician, Dapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj, nobody had ever envisaged that the duo would have ever thought of splitting. It was unthinkable within the last decade or so they hit the Nigeria music industry.don jazzy

What many perceived started during the OccupyNigeria protest where Don Jazzy and D’Banj were for the first time on different sides of the divide publicly for and against Mr. President, finally was laid to rest; it was no longer a rumour but a sad truth.

In posts on his Twitter account, Don Jazzy confirmed rumours that their partnership under the umbrella of Mohits had crumbled.

The full story on the development which may have taken the two erstwhile friends to call it quits is still trickling in; in some quarters, there has been reports that the two friends had parted ways over some issues, especially D’Banj’s collaboration with American R&B star, Kanye West, and his label, G.O.O.D Music especially what he revealed in an interview with American magazine, Ebony, where the KokoMaster as he is called, said he owned his music label with Don Jazzy included as one of his artistes. Others have it that their entry into the American music industry may have created a devil between the two.

Just like the Mo’Hits style of announcement, the news that what was perceived a rumour was true was broken via social media network, Twitter, which has for some time now been the method the Mo’Hits breaks their hit music. Don Jazzy tweeted, “Good day friends. So sorry I have been away for long as I have been going through some changes in my life. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the end of a long era and the beginning of a new one. Some of the rumours you have all heard recently are sad but true. The way forward now is to make sure I keep bringing you guys more of the beautiful music you all love to dance to. And to end d old era I will be donating the proceeds of my production catalogue from day one till date to five charity organizations. Thanks. IDJA”

There was not been any comment from D’Banj.

Though so many may be still be shocked to understand what is happening to one of the music label that had taken the Nigeria music industry to another level, let’s take a look at the anatomy how both Don Jazzy and D’Banj fared and what the future might hold in stock for them.

For starters, the loser in the Mo’Hits family is Don Jazzy; it’s very definite as he said he is announcing the end of a long era and the beginning of a new one. That would really be a very tough new beginning for him given the collaboration and complementary impact they have on each other.

From now on, the clique, “It’s Don Jazzy Again,” will only remind their fans of the good old days when they were.  Though the two met in the United Kingdom and started what later grew to the Mo’Hits music family which later gave birth to talented artistes like Wande Coal, D Prince, K-Switch and so on, Don Jazzy was seen as the Alpha and Omega at Mo’Hits and he really did have his swagger no doubt.

I happened to have met him for the first time during the 2006 edition of Hip Hop World Award at the MUSON Centre; then they were still climbing the ladder of success and Don Jazzy was nice and friendly. We had our interview on the staircase and Don Jazzy showed a promise of someone who knew where he was going in music. He was just behind the scene while D’Banj and Tuface were all over the place. While he kept a profile of the Don that fixes things, D’Banj who hitherto was seen as his protégée was more extroverted and made friends with all and sundry.  D’Banj would shake you with two hands and be very civil; his humility at that point was commendable at the level of his success and he was the one the fans were seeing and hearing his voice. He was selling while Don Jazzy preferred being seen as Don Baba J.

Fast forward to 2008, venue was the MAMA nominations evening at PLANET ONE at Maryland, Lagos. D’Banj has already won the MTV award the year before and it was the first time Nigeria would be holding MAMA award on our soil and the whole place was exciting and bubbling. Don Jazzy had grown to a Don no doubt as he then had bodyguards, overzealous wannabes, all around him. His mien had changed and he was no longer that aspiring artiste that talked with journalists on the stairs.

He has assumed power and ordered his squad to force any journalist that had his picture taken to delete it; an atitude he exhibited only to Nigerian journalists not the Channel Os, or CNNs or Reuters; he chose to be intimidating and live up to being Don Jazzy.

Meanwhile, while D’Banj on the other hand was reaching out; making more friends, opening the Koko Foundation, visiting hospitals and hospices to affect the needy,  Don Jazzy was busy trying to become a musical version of Mario Puzo’s  Don Corleone and seemed distant.

Unlike P.Diddy who is also an acclaimed producer who, once in a while dropped some tracks like he did when his homie Notorious BIG died and also when he featured Usher in I need a Girl, t Don Jazzy   was appearing in some Mo’Hits music videos and assuming a larger than life image. All was showbiz no doubt but in terms of selling himself even as a singer of which he did show some promises in Pere, he never invested in that project.

Yes, as a producer, he modeled and built artistes, Wande Coal is an example of someone he did pick from music and turned him to a Mo’Hits darling; all the Mo’Hits all stars did not have any problem revering to him as their Don but he never checked how many trophies in the trophy chest belonged to him. A rough check on Wikipedia showed just two; Nigerian Music Awards (NMA) 2006 Producer of the Year and Nigerian Entertainment Awards 2007 Music Producer of the Year as compared to D’Banj’s 12 solid awards and seven nominations. Many critics will say both were not in the same game in the entertainment field but it was all about music. No doubt, one of the tracks in D’Banj’s Entertainer album, Igwe, has the signature of Don Jazzy and he could sing Highlife but he more or less invested more time, money, publicity on D’Banj, an artiste that was smart, friendly and a good product.

None of the Mo’Hits family members has being given the kind of attention D’Banj enjoys. The mistake Don Jazzy made was not really studying the Nigerian music industry. Take Primetime Entertainment that put their whole dollar on Tuface Idibia, since he left, many will find it hard naming any artiste on their label. Don Jazzy was too concentrated on being the Don that he forgot his management researches as should have been done.

As he plans to build a new era and maybe a new label and artistes, he will face so many challenges; fans would be looking for D’Banj in his songs, acceptance will be slow in coming,  and he has to battle an already battered reputation; which Don will lose his family in an Italian mafia movie? Certainly not the Clericuzios. He will now have to rely on new publicity especially from the media who he has been harsh to, charity organizations of which he had not been too visibly encouraging and all that. Maybe, he will still stand a chance of building his already divided fans as he understands his game in Nigeria. But he should get used to the idea that thinking of continuing with the phrase, It’s Don Jazzy Again would not simply work-it is only better enjoyed when delivered by D’Banj. To be blunt, that phrase has gone cold.
