Press Release: No Honeymoon For Dr. Fayemi

The tales abound of how our members and other members of other civil societies, pro-democracy fighters, human right activists, professionals, election monitors, and observers were hounded, beaten, detained, and even killed by people who are still roaming the streets.

PRESS RELEASE:

NO HONEYMOON FOR DR. FAYEMI;

 DR. ONI & CO. MUST BE PROSECUTED FOR DESPICABLE CRIMES IN ACCORDANCE TO THE CRIMINAL LAW OF EKITI STATE.

As we share in the joy and triumphant ascendancy of one of the compatriots of our nation, a dogged fighter of democracy, and one of the uncompromising, in the 2007 electoral process, Dr. Kayode Fayemi as the Governor of Ekiti State, we cannot but to reminisce the sad events that built up to the glooming, but victorious ending, via protracted litigation over the 2007 Gubernatorial Election in Ekiti State.

The gruesome and sad events, which led to loss of lives, limbs, and properties, were sore points in the history of the state and Nigeria in general. Never again should Ekiti State or any part of Nigeria, and the world at large experience such again.

The tales abound of how our members and other members of other civil societies, pro-democracy fighters, human right activists, professionals, election monitors, and observers were hounded, beaten, detained, and even killed by people who are still roaming the streets.

There are uncontradicted allegations of burning of properties, snatching of ballot boxes, and other commission of heinous crimes against humanity, which were, however, sanctioned by our criminal law, particularly, criminal codes of Ekiti State.

As we celebrate, we also grieve losses, not only human and material resources, but loss of opportunities that have set Ekiti State behind, in the Nigeria polity.

In consideration of the above, we call on the new Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to immediately, with less jubilation and pump, get to work, constitute men of integrity and intellect, to enquire about these serial, despicable acts, and crimes against humanity, as enumerated above.

The panel that must be made of credible jurists, honed in impartial dispensation of justice, should also be able to ensure that all the personnel of the illegal government of Dr. Segun Oni are made to pay back all what they have illegally received in form of emoluments, grants, and disbursements in the past 40 months.

The panel should also ensure that Dr. Segun Oni’s unlawful years of locusts, is investigated, and the main actors of these illegalities prosecuted for financial, electoral, and other heinous crimes in the circumstance to serve as deterrent to others who are desperate to do same in future.

We restate that the activation of our criminal codes and laws over sundry crimes should not and must not be stifled for the sake of sheer political consideration and permutation as history beckons on the democratically elected governor of Ekiti State to live up to his oaths of office and do what is just and right for the development and emancipation of his people in the quest for the actualization of an egalitarian society.

Thank you.

Signed

Kayode AJULO, ESQ.

Lawyer & Executive Director, Egalitarian Mission, Africa.
