Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former president, on Tuesday in one of his dramatic displays, lashed back at clerics who had earlier criticized him over comments he made that there can be no free and fair elections in Nigeria even if Jesus Christ were the umpire. The clerics had said that Mr. Obasanjo needed deliverance (from demons) because of his comment.
The two-time Nigerian president, while speaking to aviation correspondents at the presidential wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, disclosed that the Methodist bishops are the ones in need of liberation.
“It is them the clerics who said I need to be born again and receive counselling that need deliverance,” Mr. Obasanjo said.
The clerics, under the umbrella of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) condemned the former president last Sunday in Kaduna, where they disclosed that what Mr. Obasnjo said in Washington during an interview session, was blasphemy against the name of Jesus Christ.
Mr. Obasanjo, however, declined to comment on whether he is in support of the acting president, Goodluck Jonathan, running for the seat of the president come 2011 general elections.
When asked if he was backing the acting president, Mr. Obasanjo responded, “Did you see Jonathan at my back?” When asked to repeat what he had just said, Mr. Obasanjo replied, “I am a recycled man; I don’t repeat myself.”
