Finally, the long arm of the law has caught up with the fugitive former governor of Delta State, Mr. James Onanofe Ibori. He was arrested in Dubai in the United Arab Emirate by security officers from Interpol.
Ibori had been under security surveillance after efforts to make him answer questions regarding mismanagement of public funds by Nigerian anti graft agency, EFCC proved futile.
Transparency For Nigeria gathered that the arrest has a collaborative effort between the London Metropolitan Police, UK, the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the men of Interpol.
Efforts by EFCC to effect his arrest to answer charges of money laundering and sale of shares of Delta State Government shares in Oceanic Bank Plc, some weeks back was met with stiff opposition by his local Oghara people who built protection around him before he escaped from the shores of Nigeria.
Mr. Ibori is also wanted in UK to answer questions based on alleged international corrupt charges and money laundering. His sister, mistress and other associates are standing trial in London for their involvement in the crimes.
Mr. Ibori allegedly enjoyed the patronage of former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Nigeria, Mr.Michael Aondoakaa, who shielded him away from prosecution, while former president, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua also looked the other way.
Since the sack of the Mr. Aondoakaa and now the death of President Yar'Adua, Ibori should have known his time is up to face justice.
He may be extradited to the UK.
