President Jonathan departs for World Cup opening ceremony

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is billed to attend the opening ceremony of the most prestigious soccer fiesta on Friday.

Jonathan who jetted out on Thursday night is attending the global fiesta at the invitation of South African President Jacob Zuma.

While in South Africa, President Jonathan is expected to meet with the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles and also stay back to watch the country's first match against Argentina on Saturday before returning back to the country.

The Nigerian delegation to the one month long fiesta led by Senate President, Senator David Mark is already in South Africa.

The invitation for the president to attend the opening ceremony was communicated to him by Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, minister of international relations of South Africa, when she visited the country to pay president Jonathan condolence visit over the death of his predecessor.
