A Lagos High Court presided over by Justice Olusola Williams, on Monday, acquitted and discharged Lucky Igbinovia and Effong Elemi Edu, who were arraigned by the police over the murder of a National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) chieftain, Pa Alfred Rewane in 1995. Delivering her judgment in the 16-year-old case, the judge held that there was nothing to support the case of the prosecution.
Justice Olusola eventually acquitted and discharged the accused persons. It will be recalled that Justice Williams had in 2010 discharged Elvis Iremuma, one of the surviving suspects, following a no case submission canvassed by their lawyer and held that no prima facie case had been established by the prosecution against him.
However, the court held that Lucky Igbinovia and Effong Elemi Edu had cases to answer and must stand trial. Five other suspects in the trial, namely, Sylvester Iyasele, Saturday Egbeide, Ola Obanuso, Akeem Ali, and Sunday Obanobi, have all died in prison custody while awaiting trial.
