Plateau State's National Youth Service Corps orientation camp was thrown into confusion on Saturday following a protest by over 1,750 out of the 2,040 corps members posted to the state asking for redeployment from the state.
We learnt that the corps members took advantage of the visit of the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Nnamdi Okere-Affia, to complain that the directive that they be redeployed because of the crisis in the state was not followed.
It was gathered that the corps members refused to listen to the plea from the NYSC DG, saying that they were forced to serve in the state against their wish.
According to the corps members, they have made several attempts since their arrival at the camp to get relocation forms without success.
Addressing the corps members, the DG said that the directive to redeploy those who were willing to go remained irrevocable and advised those who want to stay to remain vigilant at all times and try to live in peace with their host.
“I have directed that redeployment letters be given at the end of the orientation programme to those who want to go. However for those that want to stay, we are liaising with the state government to ensure that they are not posted to restive areas," he said.
