NINE people who were relocating from Maiduguri as a result of the growing insecurity problem in Borno State died yesterday in three separate road crashes along Maiduguri- Kano road.
The first accident involved a Volkswagen Golf Salon car with registration number XD 128 MDG and an Opel Vectra Salon with registration number XA 553 GRM. The two vehicles had a head on collision few metres to the Damaturu town city gate around 12.30 pm.
A witness, Musa Jauro said the Volkswagen Golf which was carrying fleeing men, women and children from Maiduguri was on high speed when the driver lost control and collided with the other vehicle which was on its way to Maiduguri.
“I saw 13 people in the two vehicles but five people died on the spot. Four were from the vehicle coming from Maiduguri. They include 2 married women, four men and a child who should be about two years,” Jauro said.
Yobe Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Mr. Maitizumahs Gwani confirmed that two cars moving on opposite directions carrying 13 people had a head on collision along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road.
Two other men from the car that was fleeing from Maiduguri died at the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu while the remaining six victims are in critical condition, Habu Sani, the secretary of the hospital said.
He said another woman died in the second accident which took place at Ganjarma, Fune local government area of Yobe State when the vehicle that was conveying her and her husband, including their child had a burst tyre, skidded off the road and went into the bush.
“The woman died at the spot while her husband and child with other eight people who sustained injuries are now receiving treatment here. Virtually all of them were heading to somewhere from Maiduguri”, Sani said.
He added that another man, aged about 25 years who was also moving out of Maiduguri was hit by a speeding vehicle while he was trying to cross the road in Damaturu when the truck was parked so that the passengers would ease themselves. (Daily Trust)
