Conflicts arise as a result of disputes, misunderstandings and misconception of actions and overtures. While it is a normal phenomenon for all to disagree, it becomes totally abnormal for conflicts to remain unresolved, and reoccuring every now and then. In the case of Jos, governments (this and preceding) have employed one of (if not the most) negative conflict handling tool to deal with the Jos problem. This is the tool called AVOIDANCE. A misconception, that after a while, the problem will either burn itself out or just disappear. We have failed to tackle the issues as they have unfolded. There is an unfortunate problem in the settler/indigene matter. The fact that it is unpalatable in what should be a federation does not in any way detract from the fact that it is a problem. The answers to this particular issue lie in history and they must be unearthed, addressed and then a solution acceptable to all parties implemented. This is the work of TRAINED MEDIATORS and they abound. It is not an ad hoc job for retired generals, jurists or civil servants.
Incidentally, the "settlers" and "indigenes" appear to be predominantly Muslim or Xtian. So, religion has also crept in. We must tackle this head on and stop deceiving ourselves that it a purely political problem. IT IS NOT! Undoubtedly, there are Shadow Parties who benefit from these infractions. As long as the political will is there, they can be fished out. This conflict must properly MAPPED. If we continue to play games with the Jos matter, a progrom will ensue. The EARLY WARNING SIGNALS/SIGNS are glaring. As we deliberate, you can be sure that a reprisal is being planned.WAKE UP NIGERIA!
