Adamawa State: Speaker, deputy impeached

SPEAKER of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Sadiq Ibrahim, and his deputy, Mrs. Wale Fwa, were yesterday impeached by their colleagues.

The removal of the Assembly’s principal officers was sequel to “a motion of constitutional concern’’ raised by a member of the Assembly, Jerry Kundisi (ACN-Gombi), who presented a letter, signed by 22 of the 25 lawmakers, calling for a change of the House leadership, Mrs. Fwa, who presided over the plenary sitting, thanked the House members for the opportunity given to her and Ibrahim to serve after reading the letter.
She later stepped aside, while Ahmadu Umaru (PDP-Madagali) and  Laori Kwamoti (PDP-Numan) were nominated and confirmed as the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.

Ahmed Gangwaso (PDP-Narawo) nominated Umaru for the post of Speaker and was seconded by Abubakar Jarengol (CPC-Mubi North), while Salihu Kabilo (PDP-Verre) nominated Kwamoti for the Deputy Speaker’s post and was seconded by Ishaq Bala (PDP-Yola North).

In his acceptance speech after his inauguration, Umaru thanked his colleagues for the privilege and assured them that he would strive to carry all of them along while running the affairs of the House.

“I will take all the honourable members on board. And I want to assure you that this administration of ours will relate well with the executive arm of government for the betterment of the lives of the people who elected us to serve them,” he said.

Before his emergence as the Speaker, Umaru was the Majority Leader of the House.
