The head office of Wema Bank located on Marina, Lagos Island was, on Tuesday, evening gutted by fire.

An eye witness told us that the fire which emanated from one of the generating sets in the building started around 4.30 p.m when workers were preparing to leave their offices at the close of the day’s work.

The incident led to panic as the workers were scampering to safety. However, there was no loss of life but the electronic channels server was affected by the inferno.

We gathered that prompt responses from Nigerian Fire Service, the Nigeria Police and workers of neighbouring banks mitigated the impact of the fire and subsequently helped to put the fire under control.

A statement from the bank signed by the Head, Brand and Marketing Communications, Adefemi Adeniran confirmed the incident, stating that there was no loss to the incident.

“We wish to commend the prompt response and effort of the Lagos State and Nigerian Fire Service, the Nigeria Police and our colleagues in the neighbouring banks who came out to lend their support in ensuring that the fire was brought under total control in good time,” he said..

He noted that the fire incident would not in any way affect the operations of the bank.

“We also wish to assure the public that the bank has put in place necessary measures to mitigate the impact of such occurrences and that the fire would in no way adversely affect the operations of the bank.”
