The Case For Part-time Legislators

Each time our legislators dominate national discourse, it is unlikely to be for their law making prowess or compassion for their hapless constituents who wallow in poverty from one end of the country to the other. Often, sadly, it is for the most unflattering reasons. The current issue of public concern and a veritable source of public angst is that the men and women elected to make humane laws for the people are also busy making money for themselves – at public expense.

Ensuring That All Votes Count

Listening to the inaugural address delivered May 6, 2010 by Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on his assumption of office as the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, what appears on top of the priority list of our new leader besides total commitment to good governance, is electoral reform. Hear him: “we must enshrine the best standards in our democratic practice”. For the President, “one of the true tests would be to ensure that all votes count and are counted in the upcoming General Elections”.

Running For Political Office In Nigeria?

Recently, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the provisional Time Table for the 2011 General Elections. According to INEC, the 2011 General Elections shall hold from January 8 to 22, 2011 (Option A) or from April 9 to April 23, 2011 (Option B) depending on the outcome of deliberations in the National Assembly regarding the review of the Electoral Act.
