The Politics Of Same Sex Marriage

The bill passed by the Senate on December 1 2011 banning same sex marriage has continued to generate furore. While some question whether such legislation merited to be an issue at all when there are apparently more pressing issues, I understand that the trigger for the bill was that two gay men went to a registry somewhere in Edo State to get married and were refused.

That peace may reign in Jos again

I attended a strategy review conference on ‘Peace in Jos: Arresting the Cycle of Violence’ – a project hosted by the Institute of Governance and Social Research (IGSR), Jos, and sponsored by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). IGSR is led by eminent Nigerian political scientist, Professor (emeritus) J Isawa Elaigwu.

Something is happening imperceptibly to our President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ). Shortly after he assembled a new cabinet following the April 2011 general elections, it seems there has been a gradual but deliberate abandonment of the public persona which GEJ used to good effect when, as Vice President, a cabal within the presidency sought to prevent him from being sworn in as the Acting President.
